Bank Failure Email Scams

Well, here we go again. Talk about taking another trip down the low road. I have to say the scammers are becoming more and more creative in their criminal ways. The latest scam to report and share with all my followers and Facebook Friends and community is the "bank failure" email scam.

That very pretty girl and her Mum received a message from a long time customer saying that she had a message in her Inbox saying that "your bank has failed and you need to check your Bank Deposit Insurance Coverage". The message went on to disclose that "you have received this message because you are the holder of an FDIC insured bank account. Recently the FDIC has officially named the bank you have opened your account with as a failed bank, thus taking control of its assets".

Well, guess what? It's all a bunch of hog wash and a blantant attempt to get you to disclose your personal information. The message further directs you to "visit the official FDIC website and perform the following steps to check your Deposit Insurance Coverage which includes a "link" to the "FDIC website", which is a fake. If you fall for this trick, the link will request that you "download and open your personal FDIC Insurance File to check your FDIC coverage".

What the scammers are attempting to do is: (1) Break into your checking or savings accounts and empty them out; (2) Gain access to your online banking PIN and User Name; (3) Commit Identity Theft.

Again, I often wonder how these so-called human beings sleep at night. If you receive any messages from the "FDIC", please contact your bank or financial institution and forward the message to http://www.fdic.gov/. According to the FDIC, they never, ever send out unsolicited email messages to consumers.
